Two militants were killed after the Army foiled an infiltration attempt in the Kupwara sector of North Kashmir on Monday night.

The Army said the militants were killed when it launched an operation in the Machil sector of Kupwara after observing some suspicious movement.

Army personnel deployed on the Line of Control (LoC) in Machil observed some suspicious movement along the border. As they challenged the militants who were trying to infiltrate into the Valley, the militants opened fire, the Army said.

The Army personnel then returned fire, leading to a gunfight in which two infiltrating militants were killed. The identity and affiliation of the slain militants is yet to be ascertained, the Army said.

“Based on specific intelligence input by JKP (Jammu and Kashmir Police) and corroborated by sources and agencies regarding likely infiltration attempt, a joint operation was launched by the Indian Army and the J&K Police in Machhal Sector, Kupwara on October 13, 2025. Alert troops spotted suspicious activity and challenged, which resulted in terrorists opening indiscriminate fire. Troops responded with effective fire, neutralising two terrorists. Large quantity of weapons and equipment recovered,” the Army’s Srinagar-based 15 Corps posted on the social media platform X.

Sources said that soon after the gunfight, the Army launched a massive combing operation in the area to trace and ascertain whether any other militants were present in the area.
