4 everyday drinks that can help prevent artery plaque, and improve blood flow

For heart health, one needs to be concerned with what we are eating as well as drinking. The arteries, that carry oxygen, promote blood circulation, can accumulate plaque over time, known as atherosclerosis. The accumulation of this cholesterol, fat or calcium, can clog the arteries, elevate blood pressure, can lead to a heart stroke or disease. While no “one drink” can help improve the build up of plaque, there are several that ensure a healthy blood flow to the arteries. This is done by reducing inflammation, lowering bad cholesterol and circulating more efficiently. It is to be noted that making plaque disappear is not possible, but with lifestyle changes it may can shrink and stabilize, according to Harvard health

Green Tea

1

Green tea has been highly prized in conventional medicine for centuries, and most research confirms its excellent reputation for heart health. Its active ingredients, or catechins, are potent antioxidants that reduce LDL cholesterol and oxidative stress, two prime players in keeping plaque buildup to a minimum. Daily use of green tea also enhances endothelial function, or how the inner blood vessel wall functions. Endothelial function helps blood flow smoothly and makes arteries flexible. Research indicates that consuming two to three cups of freshly brewed green tea daily might reduce coronary artery disease risk. Packaged green tea is to be avoided since it contains added sugars, which will neutralize its benefits.

Pomegranate Juice

One of the most potent natural antioxidants, like punicalagins and anthocyanins, that combat inflammation and oxidative stress in the arteries, is present in pomegranate juice. In a study conducted by National Library of Medicine, daily consumption of pomegranate juice was found to decrease the progression of plaque in carotid arteries and enhanced circulation. The flavonoids in the fruit also block cholesterol oxidation in the blood, the first step towards the prevention of plaque buildup. To get the best out of it, consume unsweetened, plain pomegranate juice, or mix seeds into a smoothie to keep fiber and reap the best antioxidant benefits.

Beetroot Juice

3

Beetroot juice is gaining popularity among athletes due to its great health benefits, but it is also good for the heart. Beets themselves contain nitrates that the body converts to nitric oxide, a molecule that dilates and calms blood vessels, reduces blood pressure, and boosts oxygen delivery.Research indicates that drinking beet juice each day may increase blood flow and lower stiffness of the arteries. It also facilitates liver function, which is responsible for cholesterol metabolism. A morning glass of beet juice or a pre-exercise warm-up can be a help to vascular health and overall energy.

Turmeric Milk

2

Turmeric, a very studied medicinal spice, has curcumin as a bioactive constituent with anti-inflammatory and lipid-lowering activity. Curcumin and enhanced fat metabolism help to reduce inflammation, which is one of the causes of arterial damage. A daily glass of this milk and a pinch of turmeric and black pepper, will help the arteries produce more blood and potentially cut-back on plaque buildup. The black pepper infused in it will enhance the absorption of curcumin, and thus the drink becomes supercharged.Symptoms of arterial plaqueSymptoms of arterial plaque depend on which arteries are affected, but common signs include chest pain (angina), shortness of breath, fatigue, and dizziness. In some cases, plaque buildup may go unnoticed until it causes serious events like a heart attack or stroke. Numbness, weakness, or leg pain can also indicate reduced blood flow.Disclaimer: This is meant for informational purposes only.
