CHANDIGARH: A 40-year-old man allegedly killed his 60-year-old mother at her residence in Sector 40, Chandigarh, on Diwali morning. The autopsy revealed that the victim was stabbed 16 times. The accused fled the scene with the weapon but was later apprehended in Haryana’s Sonipat district. Police handed over the body to the family Tuesday after the post-mortem.

Originally from Uttarakhand, Sushila had been residing in Sector 40 for several years. Sector 39 police said, her neighbour Aakash Bains reported hearing screams from Sushila’s house around 7am. When he and others reached the spot, the door was locked from inside. They accessed the house through the terrace, and saw Sushila’s son, Ravinder Negi alias Ravi, fleeing with a knife in hand. Inside, they found Sushila lying in a pool of blood with her throat slit.

The police were immediately informed via the control room helpline 112. Officers from Sector 39 police station arrived at the scene, sent the body to GMSH-16 for post-mortem, and informed the victim’s elder son, who resides in Sector 41.Based on Bains’ statement, police registered a case of murder against Ravinder Negi and launched an investigation. Police said the accused, Ravi, works at Panjab University and was mentally disturbed. His wife and daughter live separately, and he had moved in with his mother six months ago. His father passed away a decade ago. Ravi managed to escape before police arrived but was arrested later the same day in Sonipat with help from Haryana Police. The knife used in the crime was seized from his possession. He was produced before a local court and sent to judicial custody for 14 days.Forensic teams collected samples from the crime scene. Police have formed teams to further investigate the case. Sources said Ravi had previously been admitted to GMCH-32 for treatment and was known to frequently quarrel with family members and others.
