Indore: ‘Drunk’ ASI rams SUV into multiple bikes, kills man, his son loses both legs; eyewitnesses describe the moment

INDORE: Neemuch police on Saturday suspended the assistant sub-inspector and arrested him for rash driving, endangering human life and causing death by negligence after he allegedly rammed his SUV into multiple vehicles leading to the death of a 42-year-old teacher and serious injuries to four others, including his wife and two children, reports Karishma Kotwal .The 10-year-old son of the teacher had to undergo amputation of both legs following the crash. The family members of the deceased protested the accident and refused to accept the body while staging a sit-in at the district hospital. The ASI, who fled the spot, was arrested on Saturday afternoon.ASP Nawal Singh Sisodiya said that the ASI fled the spot soon after the accident late on Friday and was arrested on Saturday afternoon.Following eyewitnesses’ account that he was seemingly drunk at the time of the crash, he was taken for a medical examination whose report is awaited. The accident took place on the Neemuch-Jaora road when ASI Manoj Yadav, driving an SUV, hit multiple vehicles coming from the opposite direction.Gyanodaya ITI College teacher Dashrath Bawri, 42, his wife Lalita Bai, 35, their 10-year-old son Harshit, and six-year-old daughter Jaya on a bike were hit by the vehicle head-on. The collision was so severe that Dashrath died on the spot, while Harshit suffered severe crush injuries to his legs, forcing doctors to amputate them. Lalita and Jaya also sustained serious injuries and were rushed to hospital along with other victims. Another person, Bhopal, 44, son of Narayan Singh a resident of Athana, who was on another bike, was also injured in the incident and later referred to a higher medical centre.Eyewitnesses said that the ASI was heavily drunk and unable to stand properly after stepping out of the car. Liquor bottles were recovered from his vehicle.Following a massive protest by the family, relatives and locals, senior officials reached the spot and pacified the agitators.“The administration assured immediate relief of Rs 50,000 from the Red Cross fund, and proposals were being prepared to provide Rs 5 lakh from the CM’s Relief Fund under the Sambal Yojana. The family eventually agreed to lift the blockade after the assurance of strict action against the erring ASI,” said SDM Sanjeev Sahu.
