After OpenAI released its Sora 2 video generation model, followed by a TikTok-like AI video app of the same name last month, the company wants to transform ChatGPT into a kind of “everything app”.
ChatGPT also plans to introduce group chat and DM through an invite link. In a post on X on Tuesday, Tibor Blaho, Lead Engineer at AIPRM, posted the “first preview of ‘Group chats’ in the ChatGPT web app”.
“The top navigation bar now has a “Start a group chat” button, which allows you to generate a link and share it with others to join this group chat, shown in the new sidebar section “Group chats”. Anyone can join your group chat with this link, and they’ll be able to see the previous messages in this group chat,” Blaho wrote.

“Group chats’ custom instructions are separate from custom instructions for your personal ChatGPT, and you can let ChatGPT respond automatically or only when mentioned by someone in the group chat, but your personal ChatGPT memory is never used in group chats,” he added.
“The web app assets also mention options to add reactions, report or reply to a specific message, an indicator when someone is typing, file uploads, image creation and web search.”
Recently, ChatGPT also introduced a feature named ‘shared projects’ mode to enhance group conversations by allowing the chatbot to remember contextual information over time. Team members can upload documents to a shared project, enabling ChatGPT to utilise this data for generating relevant responses in future chats.
These projects are stored securely, making them ideal for discussions involving sensitive information or ongoing updates. A project creator can invite colleagues to collaborate, similar to sharing a Google Doc, enabling options for members to engage in either “chat” or “edit” mode.
