Sania Mirza was married to Pakistani cricketer Shoaib Malik and moved to Dubai. However, the couple parted ways and the former tennis player took charge of their son Izhaan. While speaking to Karan Johar, who is also a single parent to his twins Yash and Roohi, Sania opened up about the “daunting” task of being a single parent and how she finds it hard to leave her son for work.

Speaking to Karan, she said, “For me, single parenting is hard and also because we are working and we do so many different things.” Karan prompted Sania to look at the bright side and said, “Have you seen the flipside? It is actually liberating because you’re not at crossroads with anybody else.”

However, he quickly admitted that Sania’s case is “more daunting”. He said, “Your’s is cross border as well. You have a situation which is even more daunting and overwhelming.”

Talking about how living in Dubai and travelling to India for work makes her feel bad as she has to leave her son in Dubai, she appreciated the help of her mother, who stays with her son when she is travelling. “I find it challenging to leave him because I live in Dubai and I travel to India. That’s the biggest challenge for me to stay away for a period of one week. That for me, is the hardest part, anything else I’m fine with,” she said.

Talking about the loneliness that comes with being single after having been in a relationship, she said, “Amount of times that I have skipped dinner because I didn’t want to eat alone. I think it helped me lose weight. I don’t feel like eating dinner. I would rather just watch something and sleep.”

Festive offer

Earlier on her podcast, Sania spoke about how balancing motherhood, work, and studies has been overwhelming with Farah Khan. Sharing how she once had a panic attack on the shoot as she was dealing with her divorce and bringing up her son, Farah had recalled how Sania had called her in panic, “I got so scared. I never have seen you get a panic attack. I had to shoot that day, but I just left it and came there in my pyjamas and chappal.”

Sania admitted her tough moment and said, “I don’t want to mention it on camera, but there was a moment that was one of the lowest moments when you showed up on my set and I had to go on a live show after that. If you had not come there… I was shivering. And if you would not have come there I wouldn’t have done that show, you told me, ‘No matter what, you are doing this show.’”
