When Bill Gates told Halo game maker, 'Steve Jobs can't have that, we are...'
Microsoft acquired Bungie Studios in 2000 after Halo’s debut at Macworld with Steve Jobs. This strategic move transformed the game from a potential Mac exclusive into Xbox’s flagship franchise. The acquisition, occurring when Bungie faced financial struggles, proved pivotal, launching Halo: Combat Evolved alongside the Xbox and establishing Microsoft’s gaming dominance.

Microsoft’s acquisition of Bungie Studios in 2000 came after the gaming company showcased Halo on stage with Apple’s Steve Jobs at Macworld 1999, according to Halo co-creator Marcus Lehto. The move transformed what would have been a Mac-exclusive title into Xbox’s flagship franchise.Lehto revealed that Microsoft executives reached out shortly after the Macworld presentation, where Bungie demonstrated an early version of Halo as a third-person shooter for Macintosh computers. The tech giant saw an opportunity to secure a killer app for its upcoming Xbox console launch.

From Apple’s stage to Xbox’s cornerstone

“We got up on stage with Steve Jobs at Macworld and we talked about it there,” Lehto recalled in an interview with Kent State Magazine. “And then Microsoft said, ‘Steve Jobs can’t have that. We’re going to buy you and move you all to the Pacific Northwest, and then we’re going to have you build this game for the Xbox.'”The acquisition proved strategically brilliant. Halo: Combat Evolved launched alongside the original Xbox in 2001, becoming the system-defining title that helped establish Microsoft’s gaming division. The franchise has since generated billions in revenue and spawned numerous sequels, spin-offs, and adaptations.

How a struggling studio became Xbox’s billion-dollar franchise

At the time of Microsoft’s approach, Bungie was facing financial difficulties, making the buyout offer particularly timely. Lehto, who served as art director and designed the iconic Master Chief character through nine iterations, said the partnership represented perfect timing for both the companies. The game that Jobs introduced to the world looked dramatically different from the final product. The Macworld demo featured aliens and an epic soundtrack but was otherwise unrecognizable compared to the first-person shooter that revolutionized console gaming.Today, Halo remains synonymous with Xbox, proving Microsoft’s aggressive acquisition strategy paid off in ways that reshaped the gaming industry’s competitive landscape for decades to come.
