TOI Correspondent from London: A nurse of Indian origin has been sentenced to seven years and nine months in jail in Scotland for raping a colleague and sexually assaulting two others whilst working as a care home manager.Naijil Paul (47) was charged with the offences in 2018 but fled to Kochi, in Kerala, the day before his trial was due to begin on Dec 4, 2019, claiming his father was ill. The offences happened in 2018 when he was manager of Acorn Park Care Home in Glasgow. The care home was later forced to close following a damning report by the care watchdog.Paul, a British national originally from Kerala, was arrested in India in February and extradited to Scotland after six years evading justice. He pleaded guilty to rape and two charges of sexual assault at Glasgow high court in Oct and was sentenced on Monday.Paul will be on the sex offender list for life and is banned from going near any of the victims. The court heard how a 26 year-old colleague had returned from sick leave in April 2018, saying being in debt had been a “significant factor” in her coming back.A week later, Paul entered her office while she was alone and told her that she was at risk of losing her job due to the amount of time she had off. He told her that her job would be safe if she performed a sex act. Prosecutor Brian Bell added: “He said that if she refused, it would be her fault that the kids would be homeless.” He then raped her and told her not to tell anyone as “no one will believe you”.He also placed his hands on the hips of a 19-year-old colleague and tried to kiss her, saying, “I know you want this.” He later molested her.He also asked a 21-year-old care assistant if she was “serious” about her boyfriend and said, “I know you want it”, and tried to kiss her and molested her.Sentencing Paul, Lord Renucci said he had failed to take responsibility for his crimes and, on one occasion, had claimed he was doing the woman a favour.
