The Delhi Police Crime Branch arrested a 22-year-old man for allegedly sending terror-linked threat emails to the official accounts of the police commissioners of Delhi and Bengaluru from another person’s account, officers said. The accused, identified as Abhay Shee, was arrested following a probe spread across cities that began after the first email was received on December 7, said police.

According to investigators, an email was received on the Delhi Police Commissioner’s official ID from an account that appeared to belong to one Mohit. The sender allegedly issued threats, claiming to be affiliated with a banned organisation. The sender also provided a phone number and demanded money, police said. The email was marked to another address, prompting an immediate inquiry.

The mobile number mentioned in the email was tracked to Gurgaon. Police detained 23-year-old Mohit, a resident of Sector 37, who claimed to be innocent. He also claimed that he was being “harassed” for weeks through spam international calls, threatening emails, and complaints filed in his name.

Mohit told investigators that several email IDs resembling his own had been created. It was found that one such ID was also used on November 30 to send a threatening email to the Bengaluru Police Commissioner. He also alleged that fake complaints of rape and murder had been filed in his name to implicate him.

“During enquiry, it was found that Mohit had some interaction with a woman in the past, after which one Abhay, who claimed to be her boyfriend, called him and asked him to stay away. Abhay, a resident of Saidulajab in Saket, was then traced and apprehended,” said DCP (Crime Branch) Harsh Indora.

During questioning, Abhay allegedly confessed to creating multiple fake email accounts in Mohit’s name, using VPNs and spoofing tools to avoid detection, and sending threat emails to the Delhi and Bengaluru police chiefs. He also allegedly used a virtual international phone number to send a message to the Ganga Nagar police in Rajasthan, threatening car bomb attacks.

According to officers, Abhay also confessed to filing fabricated cyber complaints against Mohit and misusing his personal details. His phone has been seized. Officers said efforts are underway to recover deleted data.

The Crime Branch also said that Abhay allegedly wanted to “teach a lesson” to Mohit by harassing him, defaming him and attempting to embroil him.
