The Chandigarh Police has arrested a bike taxi rider of a reputed cab company for allegedly molesting a school student after a video of the incident captured by the girl herself went viral on social media.
Sector 39 police station SHO Inspector Ram Dayal said they registered an FIR and arrested the accused, Shahnawaz, late Friday evening.
Police said the incident took place on Friday morning when the student booked a bike rider from Panchkula to her school in Chandigarh, with the app displaying a UP-registered motorcycle, along with the photograph of the designated bike rider.
On their way to Chandigarh, the accused allegedly began molesting the student, police said, adding that the girl recorded the incident on her phone.
When she resisted, police said, the rider sped up. As she continued objecting to his behaviour, he lost control over the motorcycle, and both fell on the road near the Sector 37-38 small chowk, police said.
The student suffered serious injuries on her legs, while the bike (cab) rider suffered injuries on his arm, they said.
The girl, meanwhile, immediately clicked on her mobile phone photos of the accused motorcycle rider and called her family to inform them about the incident, police said, adding that the accused, however, fled the scene.

Her family rushed her to the Sector-39 police station and lodged a complaint. Police said a case was registered under relevant section of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023.
The girl told police that shortly after the ride began, the accused held the motorcycle with one hand and molested her with the other. When she resisted, the accused threatened her and accelerated the bike, eventually losing control on the vehicle and falling on the ground, she told police. Throughout the ride, the girl said, she kept shouting for help but in vain. Police said the accused, who was arrested in Manimajra, will be produced before a court on Saturday.
