For almost a decade, the town has been under attack from the Upside Down world and its terrifying ruler, Vecna. Ever since Will Byers got kidnapped, the kids of Hawkins were forced to grow up too quickly, but this is their final stand, one where they take their life back from Vecna. A lot has changed now — the town is still scarred from the opening of the rifts, and Eleven has to go back into hiding because the military is after her like never before. The characters who were initially aloof about all that was going on have now been thrown right into the fire, like Karen Wheeler. Even though she broke out her supermom instincts, she couldn’t save her daughter from being abducted. She was safe for a while, as the ‘mind palace’ she was stuck in also had Max. But with Max gone, Holly is still stuck in Vecna’s mental prison, and his plan is still in motion.

Vecna wants to use 12 children to reshape the world. He deems them to be the perfect vessels, as they are easily manipulated and controlled. That is the primary reason behind Will’s abduction, because Vecna found him to be the weakest of the gang. That fact has also changed now, because Will isn’t a scared little kid anymore. He has already shown the world what he can do once he taps into the hive mind of the Upside Down, which means that Eleven and her sister Kali aren’t the only ones with powers now.
Which brings us to a big question — what happens to Eleven if they are successful in defeating Vecna? Kali has asked her to remain in the Upside Down when it blows up, a sacrifice which would break the already shattered spirits of the gang. The group has to figure out a way to blow up the Upside Down, kill Vecna, and rescue the children, all before their worlds start merging. Now as they march into their final battle, it is still unclear if they will come out unscathed or come out at all.
