‘Work pressure broke me’: Staffer jumps from building at Delhi’s Saket court; protest held outside premises

NEW DELHI: A court staff member died by suicide after jumping from a building inside the Saket court complex on Friday, Delhi Police said.A suicide note was recovered from the spot. According to police, teams rushed to the court complex soon after receiving information and cordoned off the area. Statements of witnesses and colleagues are being recorded as part of the probe. “Police teams are examining all aspects related to the incident,” a senior officer told PTI. Following the incident, court staff and lawyers staged a protest outside the Saket court premises, raising slogans of “Justice for Harish.” The deceased has been identified as Harish, an ahlmad (court record-keeper) posted at the complex. Anil Basoya, Secretary of the Saket Court Bar Association, said the incident came to light around 10 am. “We were informed that our court staff member, Ahlmad Harish, had jumped from a floor of the building” he said. Basoya said the suicide note pointed to severe work pressure as the reason behind the extreme step. “He mentioned that the workload was overwhelming. The entire Bar Association stands with the court staff. We are here demanding justice for Harish,” he added. In the suicide note, Harish reportedly wrote that he was a 60% physically disabled person and found the demands of the job extremely difficult to cope with. “I succumbed to the pressure,” the note stated. The note further revealed that he had been suffering from sleeplessness and constant anxiety due to work-related stress. He also expressed concern that opting for early retirement would deprive him of access to his savings and pension until the age of 60, which added to his mental distress. Police said the contents of the note are being verified as part of the investigation.
