AR Rahman RESPONDS to CRITICISMS, calls India his inspiration; 'Never meant to hurt anyone'
Oscar-winning composer AR Rahman clarified his recent remarks on alleged bias in Bollywood, stating his words were misunderstood and he never intended to cause pain. He expressed gratitude for India’s artistic freedom and highlighted his diverse musical projects, emphasizing his deep connection to his homeland and its rich culture. Rahman’s clarification follows social media criticism.

Oscar-winning music composer, AR Rahman has been facing strong backlash after his remark on “communal” bias in the Hindi film industry. Many criticised him on social media. After maintaining his silence, the ‘Vande Matram’ singer released a statement in a video message on his social media handles. In the video, he shared his thoughts on the ongoing discussion over his comments and cleared the air, insisting that he never meant to hurt anyone.

AR Rahman’s video message

Rahman said, “Dear friends, music has always been my way of connecting, celebrating and honouring a culture.” He added, “India is my inspiration, my teacher, and my home. India is my inspiration, my teacher and my home. I understand that intentions can sometimes be misunderstood. But my purpose has always been to uplift, honour and serve through music. I have never wished to cause pain, and I hope my sincerity is felt.“He also said that he feels blessed to be an Indian and that he feels the country gives artists freedom of expression and respects many cultures and voices.

AR Rahman on his musical journey

AR Rahman also spoke about his long journey in music. He said every project has made his purpose stronger. He said, “From nurturing Jala presented at the Wave Summit in front of the Honourable Prime Minister and Ruhi Noor, to collaborating with the young Naga musicians, to create a string orchestra.” He also spoke about mentoring the Sunshine Orchestra, building Secret Mountain, India’s first multicultural virtual band. He addressed scoring Nitesh Tiwari’s highly anticipated epic ‘Ramayana‘, alongside Hans Zimmer. He said, “Each journey has strengthened my purpose.”“I remain grateful to this nation and committed to music that honours the past, celebrates the present and inspires the future.” He concluded the post saying, “Jai Hind and Jai Ho!”

AR Rahman’s comments about Bollywood that went viral

For the unversed, earlier, AR Rahman spoke to BBC Asian Network about getting less work in Bollywood. He said, “People who are not creative have the power now to decide things.” He added, “This might have been a communal thing also, but not in my face.” AR Rahman said he heard things through others. He said, “They booked you, but the music company went ahead and hired their five composers.” He ended it lightly by saying, “That’s great, rest for me, I can chill out with my family.”
