The Bihar Police Special Task Force (STF) Thursday arrested notorious inter-state criminal Parmanand Yadav alias Nepali — an associate of the Lawrence Bishnoi gang — following an encounter in Patna district.

STF Director General of Police (Operations) Kundan Krishnan said the operation was launched on January 22 after intelligence inputs suggested that armed criminals had assembled in the Beur police station area of Patna to carry out a major crime.

“Acting on the information, a joint team of the STF and Patna district police conducted a raid and arrested three persons — Vicky alias Neeraj Kumar and Chandan, both residents of Jehanabad district, and Shivam Anand of Lakhisarai — along with illegal firearms,” DG Krishnan said. One of the accused, however, managed to escape by taking advantage of the darkness.

The officer further said that during questioning, the arrested men had disclosed that the absconding criminal was Parmanand Yadav, a resident of Latehar district in Jharkhand. Based on this input, the joint police team tracked Yadav to the Masaurhi police station area in Patna district and laid a cordon to arrest him.

“When surrounded and asked to surrender, Yadav opened fire on the police team. In retaliatory firing, he was injured and subsequently arrested with an illegal firearm,” the DG (Operations) said.

Police recovered a 9 mm pistol, two empty cartridges, a motorcycle, two mobile phones, an Aadhaar card and a PAN card from Yadav. From the three accused arrested earlier, police also seized a revolver, six cartridges, four mobile phones, a passport, Rs 40,000 in cash and Nepali currency amounting to Rs 5,110.

Krishnan said Yadav has “links with Maoist organisations” operating in Jharkhand and has “more than 15 serious criminal cases” registered against him across Gumla, Latehar and other districts of the state. “He was also in contact with gangster Rahul Singh, associated with the Aman Sahu gang, and had travelled to Malaysia on December 11, 2025, to meet his associates,” he added.

During questioning, Yadav revealed that Badal Singh, a resident of Palamu district, was connected with the Lawrence Bishnoi gang as well as Rahul Dubey and Rahul Singh, and was involved in extorting contractors and businessmen in Jharkhand and Bihar through audio and video calls.

DG Krishnan said extortion-related cases linked to the gang were registered in Rohtas and Aurangabad districts in late November and early December 2025. “Another case pertains to a Rs 5 crore extortion demand made to the HR head of a beverage manufacturing plant in Buxar,” he added.

Bihar Police are continuing raids in coordination with Jharkhand Police to arrest other accused involved in the cases.

In another operation, the STF on January 21 seized illegal firearms following a separate encounter with armed criminals in Khagaria district.

STF intelligence inputs had allegedly indicated that one Amar Yadav and his associates had assembled under the Mansi police station limits, allegedly to carry out a criminal act.

Acting on the inputs, a joint team of the STF and local police moved in to verify the information. As security personnel approached the location, the suspects allegedly opened fire, prompting retaliatory action.

“The exchange of fire lasted around 15-20 minutes, during which nearly 50 rounds were fired from both sides,” the DG (Operations) said, adding that police fired 22 rounds using INSAS rifles and 9 mm pistols.

Police later detained Dileshwar Yadav, father of Amar Yadav, who was found hiding in a nearby forest. He reportedly told police that his son had escaped along with his associates by taking advantage of the riverine and forest terrain.

From the encounter site, police recovered two abandoned .315 bore rifles, four live cartridges, two misfired rounds and four spent cartridges.

The seized arms and ammunition were brought to the Mansi police station, where a case was registered on Thursday under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Arms Act. Police said efforts were underway to verify the criminal antecedents of the arrested individual and to trace the absconding accused.
