New England Patriots star linebacker Robert Spillane recorded 97 total tackles, two interceptions, one forced fumble, and one sack in the 2025 season. Having him on the gridiron is crucial. With three minutes and 37 seconds left in the first quarter of the AFC championship game against the Los Angeles Rams, the 30-year-old linebacker, along with cornerback and punt returner Marcus Jones tackled Broncos’ rookie running back RJ Harvey.Harvey gained only one yard on a 1st-and-10 play. Afterward, Spillane stayed on the turf for several minutes and slammed his helmet on the ground, but he was able to get up on his own.

Jack Gibbens filled in for Robert Spillane

Ryan Sanudo of the U.S. Sun reported that CBS’s camera captured Spillane walking into a blue medical tent for a checkup. Reuters reported that the Patriots star was escorted from the sideline by New England’s training staff. Backup linebacker Jack Gibbens filled in for him for the rest of the matchup.

CBS cut to an unscheduled commercial break

Andrew Gamble of the Irish Star reported that CBS cut to an unscheduled commercial break after Spillane sustained an injury. CBS Sports’ lead NFL game analyst Tony Romo commented, “They need him, this is big.” The channel then broke for commercials.New England announced that Spillane was questionable to return because of an ankle injury. Patriots senior reporter Evan Lazar reported on X that the team captain was back on the Patriots’ bench. The broadcast showed the linebacker limping on the sideline in the second quarter.

Patriots star linebacker may return for Super Bowl

Ian Steele shared the veteran linebacker’s postgame interview about going to the Super Bowl from the sideline on X. “It is a blessing; it’s an honor and a privilege. We’re just so excited,” Spillane said. “Took 60 minutes of hard-fought football. Our team coming together playing complementary football, just to find a way.” About the ankle injury, the former Las Vegas Raiders linebacker said, “Will get better and be ready for…to go.”Complementary football is when a team’s offense, defense, and special teams work together, with each unit supporting the others to maximize winning potential. The Patriots surely did. They won 10-7 against the Denver Broncos in the final step for Super Bowl! Next stop? February 8, 2026. Against? Sam Darnold’s Seattle Seahawks.
