‘No work, no school, no shopping’: Protests erupt across US against Trump's immigration crackdown

Protests against the Trump administration’s immigration crackdown spread across the United States on Friday, with organisers calling for a nationwide strike under the slogan “no work, no school, no shopping”.The protests were driven by anger over recent fatal shootings linked to immigration enforcement. Public outrage intensified after Alex Pretti, an intensive care nurse, was shot dead in Minneapolis after filming Border Patrol officers during an operation. His death followed the January 7 killing of Renee Good, who was shot by an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officer while sitting in her car.In Minneapolis, hundreds gathered outside the Bishop Henry Whipple Federal Building in freezing temperatures. After speeches by religious leaders, protesters marched towards a restricted area, shouting at Department of Homeland Security agents to leave the state. Police later warned of arrests, prompting many to disperse.Schools in states including Arizona and Colorado cancelled classes in anticipation of low attendance. Student walkouts were reported in Michigan and Georgia, where teenagers said they felt compelled to speak out against ICE actions, reported news agency Associated Press. Some businesses closed for the day, while others stayed open but pledged to donate part of their earnings to immigrant support groups. In Maine, demonstrators gathered outside a church in Portland.
