A 19-year-old woman from Tripura is hospitalised in Delhi and recovering from serious injuries after she was allegedly confined by her partner in a rented accommodation in Gurgaon for days, and sexually and physically assaulted, police said on Sunday. The accused, who is also 19, was arrested on February 19 and subsequently sent to judicial custody after the woman’s mother alerted the police from Tripura, where she lives, and a team of officers rescued the woman from the rented home.

The survivor, a student of a private university, had managed to call her mother and inform her about the assault, said police, adding that she met the accused, a resident of Delhi, last September via a social media app. Gurgaon Police’s spokesperson ASI Sandeep Kumar said, “They were in a live-in relationship and were staying in a paying guest accommodation in Gurgaon. The relationship apparently deteriorated due to frequent disputes. This led to repeated physical abuse, culminating in the assault following a late-night argument.”
An FIR was registered on February 19 against the accused on charges of voluntarily causing hurt by grievous means, wrongful confinement, and sexual intercourse by deceitful means. However, the woman’s family has demanded that sections for rape and attempt to murder be added too.
ASI Kumar said, “We will soon file the chargesheet, have witnesses ready and ensure a speedy trial.. given the seriousness of the matter.” A police officer said, “More charges like rape will be added once a conclusive report from the doctor is received regarding the extent of injuries, and other details. The doctor’s opinion in this regard is a legal formality, but the FIR will be modified accordingly.”
In the FIR filed by the police, the survivor has been quoted as saying that “he (the accused) developed physical relations with me for the first time at his house after promising to marry me. After some time, he started doubting my loyalty… in January, he thrashed me repeatedly and forced me not to tell anyone about it.”
“… On February 16, he thrashed me and attacked me with a steel bottle. He threw on the bed, on the cupboard, and even hit me on the head with an earthen pot. He burnt my private parts after pouring sanitiser,” the FIR reads, adding, “He threatened to beat me so much that I won’t be able to conceive ever. He kicked and punched me repeatedly. I got severe injuries on my leg as he slashed my skin with a knife. This continued till February 18 when I used his mobile phone, called my mother and told her about the torture in Bengali… he did not know the language. ”
Police said that after she was rescued, the woman was shifted to a government hospital for initial treatment. Due to the severity of her injuries, however, she was referred to a hospital in Delhi, where she remains under treatment, said police and is stable.

Speaking with The Indian Express, the woman’s lawyer, advocate Reena Rai, said, “I tried to meet her but could not have a proper conversation… she was inside (the ICU ) and crying. We are not satisfied with the charges in the FIR, and are pressing for sections for attempt to murder and rape to be added at the earliest.” Rai claimed that the woman was coerced into living together.
Even as investigators suspect that discussions regarding their marriage were underway between the families, the woman’s mother denied the claims. “We arrived in Delhi by flight on February 19. He (accused) has ruined our and my daughter’s life, even hanging him will not suffice. My daughter, during the call, said — ‘Ma, come and save me’. Even today, she is not well and has not eaten anything. The accused has brought us unimaginable pain and suffering. Once she is better, we will have her give another statement to the police.” Even in January, the accused had allegedly blackmailed her when she assaulted him and threatened her to not to tell anyone, she said, adding that her daughter had been thrown down the stairs at the time and had bled heavily.
