The vessel was heading for Kandla in India, MEA has confirmed. (Photo: X) A Thai-flagged vessel named Mayuree Naree was struck by “two projectiles of unknown origin” while sailing through the Strait of Hormuz on Wednesday, which caused fire and damaged the engine room.
The ship’s Thai-listed operator Precious Shipping, in a statement said, “Three crew members are reported missing and believed to be trapped in the engine room,” Reuters reported.
The government of India has confirmed that the vessel was bound for Kandla in India. The government further added, “India deplores the fact that commercial shipping is being made a target of military attacks in the ongoing conflict in West Asia. Precious lives, including of Indian citizens, have already been lost in multiple such attacks in the earlier phase of this conflict and the intensity and lethality of the attacks only seems to be increasing.”

“India reiterates that targeting commercial shipping and endangering innocent civilian crew members, or otherwise impeding freedom of navigation and commerce, should be avoided,” Ministry of External Affairs said in the statement.
The shipping company, providing update about the crew members said, “The company is working with the relevant authorities to rescue these three missing crew members.”
Thai Navy provided images of the ship showing smoke pouring out of the back of the vessel. The Royal Thai Navy said in a statement that 23 Thai crew members were aboard.

The Thai authorities informed that Oman’s navy rescued 20 crew members and is “in the process of rescuing” the other three members who were onboard the ship. The Thai navy further added it received the report of vessel getting hit around 11am, however, it did not specify the time zone.

The Thai authorities added the ship was attacked after it departed from Khalifa Port, United Arab Emirates several hours earlier, BBC reported. The cause of the attack still remains under investigation.
In an official notification, Precious Shipping company stated that they are currently coordinating with the relevant authorities to repatriate the crew members to Thailand.
“The Company is working with the relevant authorities to rescue these three missing crew members. The remaining twenty crew members have been safely evacuated and are now ashore in Oman. Company continues to closely monitor the security situation in high-risk areas and will review its navigational risk management procedures as appropriate,” the statement added.
