Sushila Karki Sworn In as Nepal’s Interim Prime Minister

IMPHAL: In a significant gesture to the new order in Nepal, PM Modi on Saturday reached out to Gen Z while congratulating interim PM Sushila Karki and signalling India’s continuing support, reports Prabin Kalita.“One special feature of the recent developments visible on social media is the way youth have been cleaning the streets of Nepal and trying to spruce up their city. This positive deed, the positive thought behind it, is not only inspiring, it is also proof of the regeneration of Nepal,” he said.In his message to “friends in Nepal”, Prime Minister Modi said, “Their positive thinking and constructive work are inspiring, a clear signal of a new dawn in Nepal.” He also acknowledged the quick restoration of normalcy after a couple of days of upheaval. “I will praise every single person who, even during the period of instability, kept the democratic values uppermost.”The compliment was both an acknowledgement of the influence of Gen Z, who not only toppled the old govt but succeeded in installing their own nominee, Sushila Karki, as interim PM despite the opposition of the entire political class in Kathmandu. The Prime Minister also congratulated Karki for her appointment and expressed the hope that “she will clear the way for peace, stability, and prosperity”.“Her arrival as the first woman PM of Nepal is a sterling example of women’s empowerment,” he said. The PM also signalled that India would continue to support the neighbour, saying, “Nepal has been a friend, a very close friend. We are united by bonds of history and faith. We have been progressing together.”
