Duke the dog – Cormorant, North Dakota (2014)

In the quiet town of Cormorant, residents jokingly elected a Great Pyrenees named Duke as their honorary mayor—and the idea caught on. Duke attended town events, posed for adorable pictures, and became the face of the community. Its presence reminded everyone that leadership doesn’t always have to be serious—sometimes it’s about spreading smiles.

Stubbs the cat – Talkeetna, Alaska (1997–2017)

Stubbs, a ginger tabby, was originally elected as a PR stunt, but soon became a full-blown celebrity. With its own chair in the town council, Stubbs served for two decades, drawing tourists from all over the world. Its laid-back attitude became a symbol of calm amid political noise.
