Bank holiday on Chhath Puja: Will banks remain closed on October 27? Check state-wise list

With Diwali celebrations just concluding, many are now preparing for Chhath Puja, leaving several customers uncertain about whether banks are open or closed. The month of October has seen a series of festival holidays, ranging from Navratri, Vijayadashmi to Diwali and Lakshmi Pujan.

Are banks closed on October 27?

Banks in several parts of the country will remain closed for Chhath Puja, with some observing a two-day holiday while others will be closed for just one day. Here is a list of states where banks will remain closed for the festival:

  • Bihar: Banks will remain closed in Bihar on October 27 and October 28 for evening and morning Puja.
  • Jharkhand: The state will observe a two-day holiday on October 27 and 28, for evening and morning Chhath Puja.
  • West Bengal: Banks will remain closed October 27 only, in observance of evening Puja.

These holidays apply only to the respective states, and banking operations in other parts of the country will continue as usual, subject to announcements from RBI’s regional offices. Chhath Puja, a festival dedicated to the Sun God (Surya) and Chhathi Maiya, is celebrated with devotion in Bihar, Jharkhand, and eastern Uttar Pradesh. Devotees offer prayers to the setting and rising sun, expressing gratitude and seeking blessings for prosperity, health, and well-being.

Upcoming holidays in October

October 31: Banks in Gujarat remain shut to commemorate Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel’s birth anniversary. All scheduled and non-scheduled banks remain closed on second and fourth Saturdays and Sundays, according to RBI’s calendar.Bank holidays does not mean that customers will not be able to carry out transactions or access funds, as most services remain available through online banking, ATMs, mobile apps, and UPI for fund transfers, bill payments, and balance checks. However, in-person services such as large cash deposits, cheque clearances, and demand drafts will not be available. Hence, account holders are advised to plan ahead and leverage digital banking for seamless access during the festive period.
