The Amritsar police registered an FIR against former Punjab transport minister Laljit Singh Bhullar, his father Sukhdev Singh Bhullar, and his personal assistant Dilbag Singh (alias Baaga) Saturday night, following the suicide of an official with Punjab State Warehousing Corporation.

Gagandeep Singh Randhawa, who worked as a district manager, allegedly ended his life after months of relentless mental harassment, physical assault, and death threats linked to warehouse construction tenders in the Patti and Khemkaran areas of Tarn Taran.

The FIR was registered at the Ranjit Avenue police station hours after Bhullar was forced to resign from the Cabinet. The resignation followed the circulation of a video in which Randhawa explicitly named the minister and his associates. Now, his family is seeking the arrest of the accused.

The FIR has been registered under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) sections 108 (Abetment of Suicide), 351(3) (Criminal Intimidation), and 3(5) (Common Intention).

According to the complaint filed by Randhawa’s wife Upinder Kaur, a government school teacher, the dispute began over tenders issued in October 2025 for new warehouses in the Patti and Khemkaran areas of Tarn Taran.

The FIR states that the tenders were cleared transparently through an online process vetted by the Food Corporation of India (FCI). However, the accused allegedly pressured Randhawa to bypass merit and award the contracts to the minister’s father Sukhdev Singh.

The minister and his PA allegedly used WhatsApp calls to threaten Randhawa’s family, claiming they knew the specific schools his three children attended and the location of his wife’s workplace.

On March 13, Randhawa was allegedly summoned to the minister’s residence in Patti. The accused allegedly beat him up, whipped him on the head with a pistol, and forced him at gunpoint to record a false video confession of taking a Rs 10 lakh bribe to favour another bidder.

The harassment reportedly culminated in Randhawa’s suicide on the morning of March 21. Randhawa allegedly ended his life at 5.50 am, leaving behind a suicide note and a video message. The couple had been married since 2007, and had three children.

After his resignation on Saturday, Bhullar posted on his social media that the allegations levelled against him are “completely baseless and false:. “However, our party has always stood by the truth and always supports the truth. Therefore, regarding the allegations against me, I want a proper investigation conducted so that the right decision can be reached.”

He has not responded to calls and messages.
