Teams from all over the world participate in the Colorado state tournament that attracts the world’s attention.
The International Snow Sculpture Championships kicked off in Breckenridge on Monday.
This year’s 12 international snow teams are: Denmark, Germany – Bavaria, Germany, Great Britain, India – Castillo, Italy, Lithuania, Switzerland, USA – Breckenridge, Colorado, USA – Vermont, USA – Wisconsin – Snowblind, USA – Wisconsin – Tomzak.
Team Switzerland’s Michael Wamann said the people here are a big part of why they come to ours from their old cold habitats.
“It’s always been like a big family,” Wuman said, picking up his carving tools. “I see some faces I’ve seen before. It’s a big hello every time.” The sculpture has a competitive side, but it’s never mean.

“It’s not a competition, it’s more of a family thing. You can see these guys, the sculptors. That’s the most interesting part for us. It doesn’t matter if it’s 1, 2, 3, not rank A.” ”
The famous snow is reportedly even better this year because they’ve made some tweaks to how they nourish their ingredients. I mentioned that it looks like “butter”.
“The snow is great, which is why we come all the way to Breckenridge,” Wumann said. “If you want to create work like ours, you need good stuff.”
The team that traveled the furthest was Team India. Mridul Upadhyay kindly told Spencer of CBS News Colorado that he told Wilson about their designs and the effort needed to compete here.
“This is the most beloved championship we have. I’m always excited to be here with so many friends,” said one more day of traveling to the other side of the world. Later Upadhyay said.
They hope to inspire a thoughtful retrospect of how human conditioning and social pressures shape us – in statues they shape out of frozen water.
“What does it mean to be an Indian, to be a man? Or what does it mean to be a Hindu or a Christian? It all comes down to socialization,” Upadhyay said.
The event is free and runs until February 1st, but reservations are required if you want to see the sculptures on Saturday the 28th after judging. Get your free ticket here.
