The controversial Digvesh Rathi catch (Screengrabs)

NEW DELHI: Umpiring came under heavy criticism during the IPL 2026 clash between Kolkata Knight Riders and Lucknow Super Giants after the controversial dismissal of Finn Allen, which quickly went viral and sparked a flood of memes online.Allen was dismissed early in the innings when he attempted an aggressive shot off Prince Yadav. The ball took a thick top edge and flew towards the third-man boundary, where Digvesh Rathi completed a well-judged catch right near the ropes. While the effort looked impressive, the closeness to the boundary cushions raised doubts among fans about whether the catch was clean or if there had been contact with the boundary.

Despite the tight call, the umpires ruled the catch as valid, and Allen was given out for 9 runs off 8 balls. However, replays and camera angles shared on social media led to widespread debate, with many viewers questioning whether proper checks were carried out before confirming the decision. The incident quickly became a talking point online, with fans expressing frustration over umpiring standards and the use of technology in such close calls. Memes flooded social media platforms, highlighting the confusion and adding a humorous twist to the controversy, even as serious questions were raised about consistency in decision-making.On the field, KKR continued their innings with Ajinkya Rahane and Angkrish Raghuvanshi stabilising the innings after the early wicket. While the match progressed normally, the focus remained on the disputed dismissal, once again putting umpiring standards in the spotlight and showing how quickly such moments can dominate the narrative in high-profile tournaments like the IPL.
