At least 35 people have been killed and around 1,200 people detained during ongoing economic protests in Iran, according to activists, Reuters reported.

The figures come from the US-based Human Rights Activists News Agency (HRANA), which said the protests have continued for more than a week. The group said those killed include 29 protesters, four children and two members of Iran’s security forces.

HRANA said it relies on an activist network inside Iran for its reporting. The group has been seen as reliable during previous periods of unrest.

The semi-official Fars news agency, which is seen as close to Iran’s Revolutionary Guard, said on Monday that around 250 police officers and 45 members of the Basij volunteer force have been injured in the demonstrations.

Authorities have not released an official nationwide casualty total, Reuters said. The protests are linked to economic hardship and rising living costs, and have spread to several cities. The United States has said it is following developments closely.
