Shaw Air Force Base, South Carolina – Karlsruhe native Rebecca McElwain was promoted to brigadier general in a ceremony on January 9 at Shaw Air Force Base in Sumter, South Carolina.
McElwain is currently assigned to the U.S. Army Central Division, where he serves as Assistant Chief of Staff, G8 Chief, and is responsible for the headquarters’ budgeting and resource management.
A 28-year veteran, McElwain’s experience ranges from Army tactical-level commanders to national strategic-level work with Congress, the Pentagon, and the State Department. She began her career as an Army Reserve medic in North Dakota and later transferred to the Minnesota National Guard. After she graduated from North Dakota State University, she was assigned to the U.S. Army Finance Corps.
McElwain has spent many hours working internationally in various locations in Asia, Europe and the Middle East, and has held leadership positions at all levels. She has partnered with German, Macedonian, Thai, and Iraqi banks to lead emergency and operational banking missions to ensure the availability of cash during military operations.
She is married to James McElwain and has a son, Andrew.
