Kerala local body polls voter turnout in 2025

The first phase of polling took place on December 9 in seven southern and central districts which were Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Alappuzha, Pathanamthitta, Idukki and Ernakulam, registering a turnout of 70.91% by evening. The remaining seven districts such as Thrissur, Palakkad, Kozhikode, Malappuram, Wayanad, Kannur and Kasaragod voted in second phase on December 11. By Wednesday afternoon, turnout had touched 62.5%, with nearly 96 lakh voters casting their ballots out of 1.53 crore eligible electors.

A total of 38994 candidates contested in this year’s elections. State Election Commissioner A. Shahjahan said the first phase was conducted without incident and expressed gratitude to voters, political parties, police personnel, and election officials for ensuring smooth polling. He noted that the 2025 local body elections recorded the highest voter turnout since Kerala’s first civic polls in 1995.

Counting of votes and results

Counting of votes will begin at 8 am on Saturday at 244 counting centres, including all 14 district collectorates. The outcome will play a crucial role in shaping political strategies in the run-up to the 2026 Kerala Assembly elections, with all major political fronts closely watching the results.

Oath-taking of elected representatives

The oath-taking ceremonies for newly elected representatives will be held on December 21 at 10 am. Corporation councillors are scheduled to be sworn in at 11:00 AM on the same day.
