Lucid Group, makers of the groundbreaking Lucid Air electric sports sedan, has unveiled a groundbreaking new electric drive unit for motorsports. It can already be seen on race circuits as the standard front drive unit for the world’s leading single-seater electric racing series.

Placed in the nose cone of all current electric World Championship race cars, the new Lucid drive unit provides regenerative energy recovery from the front wheels during braking, increasing the race car’s performance envelope, efficiency, and alignment with road car advancements. It has the same state-of-the-art high voltage continuous wave windings found in the motor that powers the Lucid Air sport sedan and a proprietary micro-jet cooling system.

Combining all motors, inverters, differentials and transmissions, this new motorsport drive unit produces 469 horsepower and a maximum rotor speed of 19,500 rpm for a weight of just 70.5 pounds (32 kilos). It features the same state-of-the-art high-voltage continuous wave windings and a proprietary micro-jet cooling system found in the motors that power the Lucid Air sport sedans.
