Luther Franklin Lawrence, his wife Mary Meldra (Swan) Lawrence, and five children ages 3 to 12 moved from Sedalia, Kentucky to Howard County in 1907. He came to Howard County for land, and fifteen miles northeast of Big Spring he purchased 640 acres. The family arrived in Big Spring by train and brought with them all their worldly goods. This included 1 cow, 2 horses, 1 wagon, 1 sari and 6 bantam chickens, all of which he shipped on the T&P railroad. They rented a house on his 10th and Greg Streets in Big Spring and lived there until the house was built on 640 acres. The Lawrence family moved into their new home on Christmas Day 1907. His daughter-in-law, Mrs. Charlie Lawrence, said: new house. ”
Luther Lawrence was a postmaster in Kentucky and knew he needed a community U.S. Post Office to receive mail in the area.
