Indian techies and professionals have been sharing their experiences and reasons for moving out of India. While many prefer Bengaluru over other cities and countries, a woman techie recently listed myriad reasons for not choosing India for her life as a digital nomad.

In an elaborate Instagram video, Shreya Mahendru, who has been working remotely from Bangkok, highlighted several aspects of her Wi-Fi life: rent, traffic, women’s safety, and infrastructure. Comparing the mornings in Thailand to India’s, Mahendru said, “Mornings are so peaceful here (Thailand). No honking at 6 am or throughout the day. Bangkok has traffic, don’t get me wrong, but it’s calm.”

Mahendru further emphasised how ‘masculinity’ in Thailand is “softer”, with men not aggressively staring at women or making them uncomfortable. “Men here don’t have that who my dad is energy or they don’t have aggressive staring energy that makes you comfortable. The masculinity here is just different, softer. It makes public spaces more relaxed,” she said.

The techie also noted that fair wages are better than cheap convenience. While in India, people can easily hire house help for chores, Thailand offers fair wages, with people hiring helpers for cleaning and other errands only when required. “Cook, clean, do everything myself and I feel respected for it. I’m not hiring someone for ₹2000/month to scrub my floor while I call that “soft life”,” she wrote.

“Here, people value personal space, speak softly, and don’t question your life choices. Public transport works. Govt offices respond. Infrastructure supports your daily routine. It’s not perfect. But when it comes to everyday peace, this version of life feels healthier. I’m not rejecting India. I’m just choosing a better daily experience for myself. That’s all,” Mahendru wrote in the caption.

The video resonated with many social media users, prompting a flurry of reactions. “Without a doubt most places outside india are safer for women. At least, there aren’t lusty staring. I can say this for sure. Even being a man, I can see the difference of ways in which people stare at my wife or any other girl/woman in India vs in other countries. Thailand is so safe,” a user wrote.

Festive offer

“So true about safety and stares. Loved how I felt like myself even when I was out. I didn’t have to constantly worry about my safety and that was such a huge peace of mind,” another user commented. “Yes calm, cleanliness and gentle people with nice public infra,” a third user reacted.
