Mumbai tragedy: Two killed, three injured after being hit by train near Sandhurst Road amid unions protest
Protest led to massive overcrowding during rush hour.

NEW DELHI: Two people were killed and three others seriously injured after being hit by a suburban train near Sandhurst Road railway station in south Mumbai on Thursday evening, police said.“Two persons were brought dead to the hospital, while three were injured. Of these, two took discharge against medical advice (DAMA), while one is being treated,” an official said. The incident occurred around 7 pm, shortly after suburban train services on the Central Railway were disrupted due to a flash strike by employees’ unions protesting an FIR against two engineers in connection with the June 9 Mumbra accident that killed four people.According to a railway official, four people, three women and a man had alighted from the wrong side and were walking on the tracks when a down fast local train hit them. The GRP confirmed they had stepped off an up slow local at Sandhurst Road after services were halted by the protest. The June 9 Mumbra crash occurred when two trains passed each other on a sharp curve, causing commuters on the footboards to fall after their backpacks brushed against each other. Following the probe, two Central Railway engineers were booked under Section 125(a)(b) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita for endangering life or personal safety.Later, the railway unions staged a sudden protest at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT), halting suburban operations between 5.50 pm and 6.45 pm. Services resumed only after senior officials assured protesters that the issue would be taken up with the state authorities, PTI reported. The disruption led to massive overcrowding during rush hour. Many outstation passengers at Thane were stranded as locals heading to Kalyan and beyond boarded long-distance trains, forcing railway officials to allow alternate travel arrangements.
