The New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) on Wednesday presented the annual budget for 2026-27 fiscal year, with a projected revenue surplus of Rs 143.05 crore. While the estimated total expenditure is Rs 5,810.02 crore, the projected total receipts was Rs 5,953 crore.

The budget focuses on improving infrastructure and mitigating pollution, among others.

The civic body has ruled out any hike in property tax this year. It expects to collect property tax worth a total of Rs.1,290 crore, while planning to transition into a 100% digital payment system, enabling residents to make all transactions through digital platforms.

In order to intensify anti-dust pollution measures, the Lutyens Delhi is expected to transition from manual brooming to vacuum-based mechanised road sweepers. “Sanitation workers will be trained on how to operate these vehicles,” said NDMC Chairperson Keshav Chandra. Besides, 100 more EV charging stations will be installed.

To expand the green cover, for the first time in Delhi, Miyawaki forestry is being promoted in the horticulture sector. Currently, a park near Nazaf Khan Road, Lodhi Colony is being developed as a Miyawaki forest.

The civic body has planned a major investment for the electricity sector. This time, around 700 dark spots have been identified and the NDMC plans to install 2,000 CCTVs for the same under the Safe City project. Also, solar-powered lighting will be installed on select roads to improve visibility at night and reduce electricity consumption.

While 10 per cent of the total expenditure goes to civic amenities, 8 per cent goes to health, sanitation and solid waste management.

According to Kuljeet Chahal, the Vice Chairperson of the NDMC, students will be taught the importance of AI in daily life and AR/VR labs will be set up in schools.

Asked about the difference in property tax rates of the MCD and the NDMC, Chahal said that in the coming month, this will be streamlined.

The civic body also has plans to introduce night markets in the Capital soon.
