In a major relief to city residents from air as well as sound pollution due to construction projects, the Pune civic body has ordered a ban on construction activities from 9 pm to 7 am.
The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has been receiving many complaints on air and sound pollution due to construction work. “It has been decided to allow construction works in the city between 7 am and 9 pm to check air and sound pollution,” said City Engineer Annirudha Pawaskar on Wednesday.

He said the decision was taken in a meeting by municipal commissioner Naval Kishore Ram. “The civic building permission department has been directed to mention the timings for construction activity in the certificate of permission,” he said.
The city has been witnessing a lot of construction and digging activity, Pawaskar said, adding “the Air Quality Index (AQI) of the city has been deteriorating. The early morning and late night construction work has been adding to the air and sound pollution. It is causing an adverse impact on the health of citizens.”
Thus, the municipal commissioner has put a time restriction on construction activity in the city to check air and sound pollution, he said.
Earlier, the PMC on directions of the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB) issued guidelines for construction firms to reduce air pollution along with installing AQI sensors at construction sites and linking it to the centralised dashboard of the civic body to continuously monitor the air quality. If the AQI is higher due to pollution then mitigation steps have to be initiated which include covering the site with tin shade, sprinkling water at the construction site, washing wheels of vehicles transporting construction vehicles.
The PMC had recently issued a stop work order on construction projects that crossed the level of air pollution.
