Getting tough on the civic staff for dereliction of municipal duties, the Pune civic body has suspended two engineers for neglecting their duties related to the unauthorised construction of two additional floors on a building in Baner.

Vijaykumar Thorat, Deputy Municipal Commissioner of Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC), identified those suspended as junior engineer Shubhangi Tarukmare and deputy engineer Sandeep Misal.

“They are being suspended from municipal service, with immediate effect under provisions of the Maharashtra Municipal Corporations Act, for the purpose of departmental inquiry,” said Thorat.

The construction of two additional floors of a private building in Baner has been brought to the notice of the municipal commissioner. Work for the sixth and seventh floors has been proposed by utilising the transfer of development rights (TDR) area and expenses, outside of the approved map, at a property located in survey No 216 (Part 6) of a building in Baner.

At the actual site, the slab work for the sixth floor has been completed, and the work on the seventh floor is ongoing, even though there is no approved plan for the additional floors.

“This actual situation was not brought to the department’s notice, and yet the proposal was submitted. This matter has come to the notice of the municipal commissioner,” said Thorat.

The city engineer is instructed to complete the departmental inquiry against Tarukmare and Misal promptly, added Thorat.

“Without prior permission from the municipal commissioner, Tarukmare and Misal will not be allowed to leave the jurisdiction of the municipal corporation.”

As per the Municipal Service Rules, both officers should be provided with subsistence allowance during their suspension. This order will be recorded in the service books of Tarukmare and Misal. Therefore, department heads are directed to take appropriate further action in accordance with the orders by the approval of the municipal commissioner and administrator.

Last week, the municipal commissioner suspended three staffers and transferred an assistant commissioner-level officer for failing to perform their duties in keeping their jurisdiction clean in Shewalwadi and Manjari. During a site visit, the municipal commissioner noticed poor sanitation, garbage-strewn roads and inadequate cleanliness measures.
