Three persons, including a minor, who entered a Malad residence to steal valuables came back with unexpected booty: a revolver, nine rounds of bullets and silver jewellery. They hid the firearm near a creek, sold the jewellery and went to Goa to party with the money.

On Saturday, however, their party ended when a team from the Mumbai crime branch tracked them down to their residence and arrested them.

An official from Unit XII from Mumbai crime branch said that the incident had taken place on November 1, when the three accused entered a flat inside an Army Central Ordnance Depot (COD) that also has residential quarters. While the main gate was shut, the trio climbed through a small gate around 1 pm.

On finding that there was no one in a particular flat, they broke the lock and entered the house. As they were searching inside the flat, they found a revolver, nine rounds of bullets and 480 grams of silver jewellery.

When the family members returned home, they found that their house had been robbed. An official said the family approached the local Dindoshi police station and mentioned that the licensed revolver and jewellery were missing, following which an FIR was registered.

Since the matter involved a missing firearm, the Mumbai crime branch also began a parallel probe into the matter and started monitoring the CCTV cameras and tracking mobile networks. They eventually zeroed in on three persons and brought them in for questioning on Friday.

During the interrogation, cops claimed the accused broke down and also took them to the spot near the Malad creek where they had hidden the firearm. The accused told the police that they sold the jewellery and used that money to party in Goa. The police recovered the stolen firearm and placed the two adult accused – Deepak Dhanve and Vinayak Baviskar – under arrest on Sunday.

An official said that the accused were produced before the court and remanded in police custody for further interrogation.
