(Photo: X/ @WhiteHouse) US President Donald Trump on Sunday reshared a social media post that suggested that Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who was born to Cuban immigrant parents, would be the next president of Cuba.
While resharing a post on his social media platform Truth Social, Trump republished a message from X user Cliff Smith on January 8 that read, “Marco Rubio will be president of Cuba,” accompanied with a crying, laughing emoji.
While responding to the post, Trump said, “Sounds good to me!” However, there is no official US statement or diplomatic plan till now that refers to Rubio taking over as the next president of Cuba.
Trump’s comments comes over a week after US military captured deposed Venezuelan leader Nicolas Maduro in an attack on the country during an overnight operation in Caracas, which killed dozens of security forces of Venezuela and Cuba.
After Trump’s reaction to the suggestion, Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez responded and said, “right and justice are on Cuba’s side.”

In a post on X, Rodriguez wrote, “The United States behaves like an out-of-control criminal hegemon that threatens peace and security, not only in Cuba and this hemisphere, but throughout the entire world.”
Earlier, Trump issued a warning to Cuba and suggested that the country should sign a deal with the United States “before it’s too late” and added that no more Venezuelan oil or money will to go to Cuba. However, the US president did not elaborate on the suggested deal. Washington’s officials have recently hardened their rhetoric against Cuba.
“THERE WILL BE NO MORE OIL OR MONEY GOING TO CUBA – ZERO! I strongly suggest they make a deal, BEFORE IT IS TOO LATE. Cuba lived, for many years, on large amounts of OIL and MONEY from Venezuela,” Trump wrote in a Truth Social post.
