CANTON — St. Lawrence County legislators unanimously passed a resolution to sign a contract to create office space for social workers at Clifton Fine Central School.
DSS Commissioner Joseph L. Seaver said during the meeting that this is for the Children’s Services Unit. They aren’t there every day, he said, but it’s just to have space when they need it.
“This is part of a larger initiative to get more out of the communities that support our school district,” he said. He added that he does.
“The Clifton Fine area lacks rural nature and resources, so the community needs to make the staff of the Department of Social Services available to ensure the best possible outcomes for families and students.” the resolution said.
It says the school has offered to provide the needed space to the county free of charge.
During the meeting, legislators also unanimously passed a resolution amending the DSS’s 2022 budget due to higher and lower than expected costs in certain areas.
“Throughout 2022, we experienced higher-than-expected costs in several areas,” said Seaver.
These areas were administration, Medicaid, child and foster care, and general services to beneficiaries.
The resolution calls for $138,291 in increased income, most of which comes from childcare.
Seaver also said the cost of medical assistance was lower than expected, and the revised budget is also reflected by cutting the budget by $323,710.
“We need to move some money to get things sorted out and that’s what this budget change is for,” Sieber said.
The resolution will be moved to the next board meeting on February 6th.
