Phoenix (3TV/CBS 5) – Arizona’s superintendent of public education, Tom Horn, has sparked controversy at a statewide teachers’ conference by canceling several presentations scheduled for this week. They included seminars on social-emotional learning, diversity, and racial trauma. Former teacher Michaela Rose Clausen is set to speak at the conference, and her presentation touches on helping students regulate their emotions. , to seriously consider how we understand burnout,” Clausen said. “When students have time to self-adjust, they can ask, ‘Why am I feeling this way? What can I do about it? How can I behave as a better student?’ I will be ready to learn for,” Clausen said.
A spokeswoman for the Arizona Department of Education said in a statement that these topics had nothing to do with “major academics” and were replaced with presentations focused on improving test scores. Almost every day, the Department of Education receives calls from teachers who want to use their class time to teach core subjects such as reading, science, history and math,” spokesman Doug Nick said.
Horn promised to eliminate social-emotional learning, critical race theory, and bilingual education. This comes on the heels of a controversy in 2018 when he landed the same position. A federal judge ruled that Horn was “motivated by racial hostility” when he banned the study of Mexican-Americans in the classroom.
