Still eyeing the Arctic? White House posts AI image of Trump with penguin in Greenland

As Donald Trump sharpens his focus on the Arctic island, the White House has reinforced its messaging by sharing a representative, AI-generated image that taps into the viral “nihilist penguin” trend, showing the US president walking alongside a penguin in Greenland, a symbolic move amplifying his Greenland pitch. The image, posted on X by the White House, shows Trump in an overcoat traversing a snowy Greenland landscape with a penguin holding the US flag, while the mountains ahead displayed a Greenland flag. Footprints in the snow trail the two as they walk together, underscoring Washington’s renewed emphasis on the strategic Arctic territory.Days earlier, Trump had shared another AI-generated image depicting Greenland as a US territory, with JD Vance and Marco Rubio alongside him as he plants the American flag—an image that further reinforced his assertive Greenland pitch.

What is ‘nihilist penguin’?

Primarily known as the “Nihilist Penguin” meme, also dubbed the “Lonely Penguin” or “Wandering Penguin”—the viral clip originates from German filmmaker Werner Herzog’s 2007 documentary on Antarctica. While it has circulated online for nearly two decades, it has only recently crystallised into a full-fledged meme. The scene shows a lone, seemingly disoriented penguin breaking away from its colony and heading toward the Antarctic interior, with distant mountains on the horizon. In the film, Herzog himself describes the journey as an ominous, one-way march—framed as a path leading almost certainly to death.Trump has repeatedly argued that Greenland should be absorbed into US territory for “security purposes,” citing concerns that allowing Russia or China closer access to the region could pose long-term strategic risks. His remarks have triggered sharp backlash from several countries, including key NATO members. In a separate post on Truth Social, Trump lashed out at Canada for opposing his proposed “Golden Dome” missile defence project over Greenland. He warned that Beijing could “eat them up” within a year, accusing Ottawa of choosing closer economic ties with China over US-backed security guarantees.“Canada is against The Golden Dome being built over Greenland, even though The Golden Dome would protect Canada. Instead, they voted in favour of doing business with China, who will ‘eat them up’ within the first year!” Trump wrote. He also addressed security and strategic concerns in the Arctic, marking an apparent U-turn from his earlier rhetoric about seizing Greenland or using tariffs as leverage against European allies.According to ABC News, negotiations over Greenland’s future will continue in the coming days and weeks, with delegations from the United States, Denmark, Greenland and NATO set to work out the contours of a potential deal.
