Stock market today: Indian equity benchmark indices, Nifty50 and BSE Sensex, closed in red on Tuesday as subdued year-end volumes, continued selling by foreign investors and a lacklustre global market backdrop dampened risk appetite.Nifty50 ended nearly unchanged, easing 3.25 points, or 0.01 per cent, to settle at 25,938.85. Extending losses for a fifth straight session, the BSE Sensex slipped 20.46 points, or 0.02 per cent, to close at 84,675.08. The index moved within a narrow band during the day, touching a high of 84,806.99 and a low of 84,470.94, a range of 336.05 points. Among Sensex constituents, shares of Eternal, Infosys, Asian Paints, UltraTech Cement, Bajaj Finance, HCL Technologies and Titan weighed on the index. In contrast, Tata Steel, Mahindra and Mahindra, Bajaj Finserv and Axis Bank provided support.Across Asian markets, Hong Kong’s Hang Seng closed higher, while benchmarks in South Korea, Japan and China finished lower. European stocks were trading slightly in the green, while Wall Street ended lower in the previous session.According to exchange data, Foreign Institutional Investors sold equities worth Rs 2,759.89 crore on Monday, even as Domestic Institutional Investors remained net buyers with purchases of Rs 2,643.85 crore.
