It was supposed to be a mundane 20-minute ride from her office in Rohini to meet some potential clients on March 12 afternoon. Instead, it turned out to be a harrowing experience for a 32-year-old woman, who booked a Uber bike ride, only to be allegedly molested by the rider. On Saturday, the rider was arrested for allegedly misbehaving with her and touching her in an inappropriate manner while she was riding pillion with him.
DCP (Rohini) Shashank Jaiswal identified the man as Sachin Chaudhary (34), a resident of Badali village. He was sent to 14 days of judicial custody by a court, said police.
Speaking to The Indian Express, the woman — who works in a private company — alleged that as soon as the ride started, she discerned something odd about the rider’s behaviour.
“I was sitting with both my legs on one side. There was some space between us but the man kept finding ways to touch me. His behaviour started becoming more brazen and erratic… When I told him to stop the bike, he started racing the bike at a high speed and kept hitting the brakes repeatedly so that my body would touch his,” she said.
The woman said she was frozen with fear. “I kept shouting at him to stop… that’s when he started abusing me and threatening to kill me… I checked my phone and saw that he was taking me in a different direction… I started shouting again, and told him that if he did not stop, I would jump off… He grabbed me again, and told me, ‘if you shout, I will cut your throat and kill you’,” she alleged.
According to the woman, after a while they reached near a school and as the bike slowed down, she jumped off. She alleged that she started screaming, and soon, some people, including the school staff, came forward to help her.
“…Some of the staff and teachers came out and took me inside after finding me crying on the roadside,” she said.
However, the man allegedly kept circling around the school’s gate. “He yelled abusive words at me and threatened to kill me. It was only when one of the teachers confronted him that he ran away,” she said.
The woman then filed a complaint with Uber and also called the police. Further, she posted a two-and-a-half-minute video on social media describing her version of the events.

When contacted, an Uber spokesperson described the incident as deplorable. “What has been described is deplorable and has no place on the Uber platform. We reached out to the rider soon after the case was reported to us and removed the driver’s access to Uber account. We stand ready to assist law enforcement authorities in the investigation,” the spokesperson added.
During the probe, police found that Chaudhary was involved in a case of dowry death in 2011, the DCP said, adding that he has cleared Class 10 and has been working as an app-based bike taxi driver for the last one year.
An FIR under sections 74 (assault or use of criminal force to a woman with intent to outrage her modesty), 79 (word, gesture, or act intended to insult the modesty of a woman), 351 (3) (criminal intimidation) was registered at KN Katju Marg police station on Saturday. The bike used in the crime was recovered, police said.
According to the woman, she frequently travelled by bikes and had never faced any issue before. “I feel scared to venture out now,” she said.
