On Friday afternoon, a team comprising a legal officer and police personnel visited a house in Southeast Delhi’s Kalkaji to execute a court order for eviction amid a dispute between the tenants and the landlord. A family living in the house had not allegedly paid the rent for nearly two years.

The team found the house locked from inside. After receiving no response, they used a duplicate key to open the door, only to find a woman (52) and her two sons hanging from the ceiling fans.

The deceased have been identified as Anuradha Kapoor (52) and her two sons — Ashish Kapoor (32) and Chaitanya Kapoor (27).

A suicide note was allegedly recovered in which the deceased blamed financial crisis for taking the extreme step. “A suicide note recovered from the spot indicates that the family had been suffering from depression, which appears to have prompted them to take this extreme step,” a police officer said.

A police officer said that Anuradha’s husband had died last year, and her sons were unemployed. “Her husband was a builder who was deep in debt. In December 2023, he had rented this house, located on the third floor of the residential building, but the family never paid the rent,” the officer added.

“Last year, her husband died. After this, her landlord filed a case in court to vacate the house,” the officer added. “The family was under a huge debt, and amid the financial crisis, the two brothers even tried to died by suicide last month by slitting their wrists. The duo was also admitted to a hospital,” the officer said.

On Friday, a bailiff, accompanied by local police personnel, visited the residence to execute the court order for possession.

“The family had been living in the Kalkaji house for a rent of Rs 40,000 per month… but they had failed to pay the rent for the past two years. This led to a dispute with the landlord who wanted the house vacated, and the matter eventually reached the court,” another officer said.

Some relatives of the trio who live in Lajpat Nagar have been informed about the deaths, police said. The bodies have been shifted to the mortuary at AIIMS for further proceedings under Section 194 of BNSS.
