Fellow travellers, locals, and Mangione’s own notes indicate that he transitioned from seeking human connection at the beginning of his trip to isolating himself, obsessing over how to make a dramatic statement regarding perceived injustices in insurance coverage, the Times added. “He didn’t use any digital devices,” said Juntaro Mihara, owner of a small guesthouse in Tenkawa, where Mangione stayed for six days. “He was quiet, and only had minimum necessary conversations with other guests or maybe didn’t talk with anyone.” Family and friends reported that Mangione went off the grid upon his return to San Francisco in July, 2024, ceasing to respond to messages and becoming inactive on social media months prior.
