Google’s redesign of Android Auto fully supports one of Google’s own mapping apps, as Waze now supports Android Auto’s “Coolwalk” dashboard after releasing a beta late last year. Now
The mapping service, currently rolling out with Waze’s latest beta update, added support for the Android Auto dashboard. The change reached many users early today, but it won’t be available to everyone until it hits Waze’s stable update channel, probably in the coming weeks.
When the Android Auto dashboard redesign, known as “Coolwalk”, first appeared in beta, Waze was not supported. Users will still be able to run mapping apps, but will not see support for the new panes interface on Android Auto’s home screen where mapping apps can be displayed alongside music apps and other information. Rather, a few weeks after the beta, I started getting pop-ups saying support for Waze was coming “soon.”
It’s unclear when this support will be implemented in the stable version of the Waze app, but it doesn’t matter at this point.
Despite announcing the release of the update just after the New Year, as of late January, Google had yet to roll out support for “Coolwalk” to the majority of users. As we found in a recent survey, 80-90% of Android Auto users still don’t have access to the dashboard redesign, and things don’t seem to be getting any better. It seems natural that Google may have been waiting for this update to become available in order to flip the switch, as it was a key app for Auto. I do not know.
