A 53-year-old woman and her four children were killed after the car they were travelling in was hit from behind by another vehicle in Barabanki district on Wednesday afternoon. The impact caused both vehicles to catch fire and burn completely.
According to police, the woman and her children — all under the age of 14 — were travelling from Varanasi and had stopped their car on the roadside when the collision occurred. Five occupants of the second vehicle, also a car, sustained injuries and were undergoing treatment. Doctors said their condition was stable.
Soon after the collision, both vehicles caught fire. The car carrying the deceased was fitted with a CNG kit, which may have contributed to the blaze, police said.
Police reached the scene and took the injured to hospital where the five members of the family were declared dead.
No FIR was registered in the matter till filing of the report.
The bodies have been sent for postmortem and the report is awaited, police added. The deceased belonged to Varanasi.
“The victims were travelling from Varanasi to Lucknow. Their driver had parked the vehicle on the roadside and went out for refreshment. In the meantime, another car came from behind and rammed into the vehicle in which the victims were seated,” said Krishna Kant Singh, Station House Officer of Subeha police station.
