Amid an investigation by the Assam Police’s Crime Investigation Department (CID) into superstar singer Zubeen Garg’s death, his family has submitted their own complaint to the agency.

A Special Investigation Team (SIT) has been constituted to probe a case registered with the CID against Garg’s manager Siddhartha Sharma and Northeast India Festival organiser Shyamkanu Mahanta, among others, following Garg’s death in Singapore in a swimming incident. The case was registered under sections of the BNS pertaining to criminal conspiracy, culpable homicide not amounting to murder, and causing death by negligence.

The case had been registered after dozens of complaints were filed against Mahanta and Sharma in police stations across Assam, accusing them of mismanagement and negligence.

Zubeen Garg had reportedly experienced breathing troubles while swimming during an outing on a yacht while in Singapore, where he had travelled as a cultural ambassador of the Northeast India Festival. The certificate of death issued by Singapore authorities recorded the condition leading to death as “drowning”.

On Saturday, Garg’s wife Garima Saikia Garg, sister Palmie Borthakur and uncle Manoj Borthakur submitted their own complaint to the CID.

“We have requested for questioning of the entire team that was in Singapore, including Shyamkanu Mahanta, Siddhartha Sharma and the people in Singapore who were present at the time that the incident took place. We were constrained by circumstances to file our own complaint so far,” said Manoj Borthakur.

Special DGP M P Gupta, who is heading the SIT constituted in this matter, said the CID is investigating the different angles of allegations surfacing after the incident. “There are many allegations against the accused, and more than 40 police complaints. We are investigating the allegations in all of them,” he said.
