A serving Army officer and his family were allegedly harassed and assaulted by a group of men drinking outside their residence in Delhi’s Vasant Enclave on April 11, but a PCR team present at the spot failed to take action, alleged the officer’s wife in her police complaint. DCP (Southwest) Amit Goel said, “Cognisance in the matter has been taken and an FIR is being registered. The accused persons are being traced. During preliminary enquiry, lapse was found on part of Inspector…and the investigation and he has been sent to District Lines.”

In a statement, the Indian Army said, “The authorities in the Indian Army have taken serious cognizance of the case. A military police team has been directed to assist the officer. The Delhi Police has been approached for an expeditious investigation…”

According to the complaint, the incident took place around 10 pm when the woman noticed two men allegedly consuming alcohol inside a car parked near their residence, and claimed she had photos and videos of the vehicle.

When she confronted the men over their conduct, she alleged they misbehaved with her and passed inappropriate comments. Alarmed, she called her husband and son for help and also dialled police helpline number 112. A PCR vehicle was subsequently dispatched to the spot. However, the complainant alleged that instead of intervening, the PCR personnel spoke to the occupants of the car, who in turn made them talk to someone over the phone.

The Army officer’s son later told The Indian Express that a police officer, after the call, refused to file a complaint, saying he would do it later.

As per the complaint, the situation escalated after the men in the car called around 7-8 acquaintances to the spot. The group allegedly assaulted her husband and son for nearly 20-25 minutes. The son said he was the primary target of the assault.

The group allegedly continued to pass unwanted comments at the Army officer’s wife during the assault, outraging her modesty.

Around 10.50 pm, the family reached Vasant Vihar police station to lodge a complaint. After waiting for over an hour, the woman submitted a formal complaint seeking registration of an FIR against the individuals involved for alleged assault, harassment, and misconduct.

The Army officer’s son said he sustained injuries on the face, ribs, elbows, knees, and palm, as well as around the neck due to repeated blows from behind. He said that the Sena Military Police have taken the matter in their hands and are also helping.

The woman also claimed that despite her son bleeding, the police insisted on an MLC report before registering the complaint and did not provide a vehicle to take them to the hospital. “Eventually, my husband took our son to the Army Hospital himself for treatment and X-rays,” she alleged.

An officer privy to the investigation said that the allegations of not taking them to the hospital are baseless, as they were given medical assistance. “They preferred to go to a military hospital. Our team supported them,” the officer said.
