AB de Villiers makes bold call on Abhishek Sharma: 'He will…’
India’s Abhishek Sharma (AP/PTI)

Former South African cricket star Ab de Villiers has predicted that Indian opener Abhishek Sharma will thrive in the upcoming five-match T20I series in Australia, following his outstanding performance in the Asia Cup 2025. Sharma amassed 314 runs in seven matches during the Asia Cup, maintaining a strike rate of 200 and an average of 44.86, establishing himself as a formidable force in T20 cricket.Sharma’s aggressive batting style and ability to dominate bowlers from the start has given India significant advantages in recent matches. His performance in the Asia Cup demonstrated his capability to score quickly while maintaining consistency.

The upcoming Australian tour will present different challenges with varying playing conditions. However, de Villiers believes these conditions will suit Sharma’s batting style.

Poll

Is Abhishek Sharma the best opening batter in T20 cricket right now?

“Abhishek Sharma is in the form of the life, some are saying he is the best opening batter in the world right now in this format. Will be great to see what he can get over there in Australia. I think he will enjoy the conditions because there’s quite a bit of bounce,” observed de Villiers, speaking on his YouTube channel.De Villiers further elaborated on Sharma’s technical prowess: “He likes freeing up his arms over the off-side, opening up the blade, covering the point to third man boundary, hitting sixes over there. He can also clear up or open up the leg side as well. All round player, fantastic batter to watch.”The upcoming Australian tour series will serve as a significant test for Sharma, who has shown remarkable consistency in Asian conditions. His performance in Australia could further establish his credentials as a versatile international batsman.
