Bank holiday on Chhath Puja: Will banks remain closed on October 28? Check state-wise list

With Diwali festivities concluded, many are in celebration mode for Chhath Puja, leaving people uncertain about whether banks are open or closed on October 28, Tuesday. The month of October has seen a series of festival holidays, ranging from Navratri, Vijayadashmi to Diwali and Lakshmi Pujan.

Are banks closed on October 28?

Bank holidays vary from state to state as the celebration is region-specific. Banks in Bihar and Jharkhand are closed today for Chhath Puja (Morning Puja). While branches in other regions will continue to function normally, those in 2 states mentioned above will stay closed. However, even if physical branches are closed, customers can use online banking and digital payment platforms to complete any necessary transactions during the holiday.People celebrate Chhath Puja, which is dedicated to the Sun God (Surya) and Chhathi Maiya, in states like Bihar, Jharkhand, and eastern Uttar Pradesh. Devout people mark the festival by praying to the sun as it rises and sets, expressing gratitude and asking for blessings for health, prosperity, and well-being.

Other upcoming bank holidays in October 2025

October 31: In observance of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel’s birth anniversary, Banks in Gujarat will be closed on October 31.Additionally, according to the RBI calendar, on the second and fourth Saturdays of every month, as well as on Sundays, all scheduled and non-scheduled banks are closed. Bank holidays do not stop customers from accessing their accounts or completing transactions, as most services remain available through online banking, ATMs, mobile apps, and UPI for fund transfers, bill payments, and balance inquiries. However, in-person services like large cash deposits, cheque clearances, and demand drafts will not be available.
