Karur stampede: Chennai police arrest YouTuber Felix Gerald; probe over viral videos

CHENNAI: The Cybercrime Wing of the Chennai police arrested YouTuber Felix Gerald on Tuesday for questioning in connection with videos he published about the Karur stampede that claimed 41 lives during a political campaign last Saturday.Police said Gerald uploaded interviews with guests, including Leo from Savukku Media Limited, and the videos went viral on social media. It was not immediately clear whether his detention was linked to a specific video.

According to Gerald’s staff, a team of officers identifying themselves as city police personnel arrived at his residence in Kamdar Nagar, Kodambakkam, around 7.15 a.m., showed him documents, and took him for inquiry. “When we tried to trace him, we first went to Nungambakkam police station and later to the city police headquarters, but he was not present at either place,” one staff member said.

Should people be careful while sharing videos online about tragic events?

The development came as part of the police crackdown on misinformation regarding the Karur incident. On Monday, cybercrime police arrested three individuals, including two TVK party workers, for spreading rumours about the stampede on social media.Police said they were monitoring online platforms and taking action against those circulating unverified or misleading information that could disturb public order. Police reiterated that strict legal action would follow against anyone responsible for spreading false narratives about the tragedy.Felix Gerald was earlier arrested by the city police in 2024 for interviewing YouTuber Savukku Shankar and uploading the videos on his YouTube channel, Red Pix Channel.
